Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota (GESMN) is connecting people to digital resources and using virtual reality (VR) to improve their access to employment and address the digital literacy divide that disproportionately impacts seniors, low-income individuals, rural communities, people with disabilities, immigrants and non-native speakers. Digital literacy improves employability and increases earning potential and access to more jobs.

Over 92 percent of all jobs require digital skills, but approximately one-third of workers don't have the foundational digital skills necessary to qualify for these jobs, according to The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.

GESMN has distributed over 200 technology resources to eligible participants in its job training programs in the last year to help bridge the digital divide including:

  • Monthly internet service through Comcast's Internet Essentials program

  • Refurbished laptops, phones and tablets

  • Wi-Fi hotspots

“We understand that just giving computers to participants doesn’t solve the digital divide issue,” explains Metadel, GESMN digital services coordinator. “Tech access and digital literacy skills are unique to every person. While some may know everything about Instagram or TikTok, they may not know how to use a PC or set up an email account. Some people have steady and reliable access to the internet, others don’t. We know that having access to technology and a diverse set of digital skills is essential for finding and keeping employment.”

New this year, GESMN is part of a national cohort of Easterseals affiliates coming together through a Comcast Digital Literacy Learning Community to share resources and elevate best practices from across the country.

Virtual Reality Tools for Training

GESMN also uses VR headsets in its career training programs to break down learning barriers. The virtual reality programming features over 30 hands-on career exploration modules that allows students to “try on” a variety of in-demand careers – from manufacturing to automotive.

“Immersive learning experiences transform the classroom and allow students to practice soft skills and gain exposure in safe and controlled spaces,” explained Julie, GESMN workforce development director. “This can be especially powerful for youth with disabilities and other barriers. We see students’ confidence increase when they use the headsets.”

GESMN’s automotive training uses VR programming. “[It] gave me the confidence to walk into a shop and not worry about lifting cars or doing tire or oil changes because I’ve done it before,” said Jordan who graduated from GESMN’s automotive program and is now attending Saint Paul College for additional certifications.

GESMN offers nearly 20 career and training services to help people enter or advance in the workforce. Hear from Jordan himself how automotive training and VR tools helped him reach his goals.
