“I’ve had many different jobs and at each one I felt like I was treated differently from my co-workers. I struggled with advocating for myself and letting my managers know what I needed to succeed,” said Kendra, reflecting on how mental health challenges affected her communication style.

In 2023, while at Zumbro Valley Health Center, Kendra was referred to Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota’s (GESMN) Individualized Placement and Support (IPS) service. Kendra connected with her career navigator Mike, who provided support and helped refine her communication skills.

“I like the support Mike gives me. He’s always there for me if I need help talking to my managers,” Kendra said. Kendra works as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) at Spring Valley Living. “I recently passed my CNA certification, which involved both knowledge-based and hands-on skills assessments.”

Since receiving her CNA certification, Kendra has gained more independence in caring for residents. “I help residents with getting them into bed, feeding, bathing, taking vitals and most importantly listening to them,” Kendra explained. “My favorite part is taking care of the residents.”

Mike expressed pride in Kendra’s accomplishments, saying, “Even though the CNA certification test was pretty intimidating to Kendra, she still focused on studying and passed it under the allotted time. I’m proud of how Kendra has become more assertive in advocating for herself with co-workers and supervisors.”

Reflecting on her experience with the IPS program, Kendra said, “It’s been really positive. I’ve enjoyed working with Mike and I feel like I’ve been successful at my job because I know he’s there to support me.”

Kendra’s advice to others is, “Don’t be afraid to try it out. I was scared, but I believe I’ve made great strides since joining GESMN’s IPS program.”

As for her future, Kendra said, “I’m not sure yet, but I might like to get a similar job at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.”
