National Thrift Shop Day is Saturday, August 17, 2024. Whether you're a seasoned thrifter or new to secondhand shopping, Goodwill stores offer unique finds for less. From clothing to furniture, books to housewares -- thousands of items are added daily with prices starting at just $1.99.

Pro Thrift Tips:

1. Prepare for your thrifting trip.

Locate your neighborhood Goodwill and plan your time by making a list of your must haves. Whether you're looking for vintage clothing, home décor, or DIY project supplies, a list helps you stay focused and home in on essentials. Grab a Goodwill reusable tote to carry your thrift haul.

2. Bring a friend.

Thrifting is more fun with friends! Bring a friend or family member along for a day of treasure hunting. Having a second pair of eyes can help you spot great finds and share the thrill of discovering hidden gems .

3. Check the calendar.

We offer weekly color tag sales and discounts for healthcare workers, first responders, military & seniors (55+). Goodwill VIPs get exclusive savings and deals delivered right to their phones and there are many ways (and days) to save. Weekends are busiest at Goodwill, so try coming during the week to score deals.

4. Be creative.

Look for items that can be upcycled or repurposed. An old dresser can become a chic new buffet, a vintage pitcher can become a stylish vase, a unique tray doubles as art, and a colorful shirt can be transformed into a stylish throw pillow. Upcycling and thrifting reduces the impact of fast fashion on the environment. Did you know Goodwill diverts over 65 million pounds from Minnesota landfills every year?

5. Shop seasonally.

Shop what’s in season to get the best deals. With fall just around the corner, get back to school or autumn attire for less: comfy sweaters, jackets, perfectly worn jeans and stylish shoes. Get your space ready for autumn with décor and housewares. Check out one-of-a-kind fall finds from local influencer, Erin Francois, on social media.

6. Share your finds.

Post your thrifty finds on Instagram! Use hashtag #goodwillmnfinds and tag us @goodwillmn. You might get highlighted on our social! With thousands of items added daily, you can shop sustainably at Goodwill, knowing you waste less and get more.

By donating and shopping at Goodwill, you help support our nearly 20 career and training services that help over 5,500 Minnesotans get equitable access to jobs annually. Learn more here and happy thrifting on National Thrift Shop Day!
